Skater Boy

So my oldest child turned 7 - I know 7 is not very old, but Cohen is slightly older than the average 7 year old.  He doesnt like cars or blocks or playing in mud.  He likes, science experiments, skateboarding, bmx riding and all the other 'big boy things'.  So it was only fitting that I gave him a 'Big Boy Party'.  We phoned our local council and got permission to set up a party at the local Reservior.  It is a massive big concrete playground for kids.  It has roads and zebra crossings painted on it, and its completely flat so super safe for skateboards, skates, scooters and bikes.

This is my boy.  My handsome, intelligent, full of life little man.  He is every bit the caring, affectionate person that I hoped he would grow into - and already at 7 he is showing me that he is going to be a wonderful man.  I couldnt wait to plan the perfect party for him.  Something that he could invite both of his best friends too (who are girls) but something that was still fitting for him being a real boys boy.  A skateboard/scooter/skate party was it.  Every 7 year old loves to get outside and play.  And the girls had just as much fun as the boys.  There was no way Cohen was having his party without his 2 best friends!
This is the dessert table I created for Cohen.  It was the 'cool' and 'awesome' table he wanted.  It included everything including mini penny skateboard cupcakes.  I made it quite simple as we also had a sausage sizzle to fill their tummies.  The 3 jars at the centre had jelly beans, bon bons and licorice - Cohens favourite lollies.  We also had little popcorn cups, marshmallow ice cream cones, the cupcakes and cake pops.  Cohen and his friends were all suitably impressed.
The beauty about having the party here was the kids could just enjoy them selves.  We didn't need much structure and therefor made the whole process a lot easier for me.  I got to talk to people instead of running around organising things. We had a few games at the party and Cohen didn't want too many little kid games.  The scooter race was a hit.  Only 1 fall and scraped knee.  We also played pass the parcel, but I did it a little different.  We passed around a box with enough presents for every child.  Once the box landed on them they chose a present and taped to the present was a task.  They had to complete the task before they got the present. If they didnt do it, they had to put the prize back in the box.  We had things like 'sing happy birthday to the birthday boy', 'hop on 1 foot for 20 seconds', 'scream out I love boys/girls'. Etc, your imagination is your only limit!  It was an absolute hit with the kids - they giggled and giggled.
I am not usually one for having big parties.  But this type of party allowed Cohen to invite everyone he wanted.  Including school friends, footy friends and family friends.  I kept the lolly bags very simple.  A little mini skateboard in each and then they filled them up themselves from the piniata and dessert table.  No one left empty handed!!
The mini Penny Skateboard Cupcakes made by me!  The kids loved them.  I love creating things and putting a smile on my children's faces.  Birthdays are a big deal in our house and I am the guilty one of making that happen.  I spend too much on presents, and I probably cook too much food.  I definitely kiss, hug and sing to them too much on their special day.  I make them wear a birthday badge to school and I even make them wear a daggy birthday hat at the dinner table at home.  My children usually have 3 cakes, the school cake, the party cake and the at home dinner cake.
Kids grow up way too quick, and I want them to remember their birthday for ever.  I want them to feel spoiled, feel special and feel like I love them. They dont get much through out the year, so this is the day I can give them everything I can!!
